Celebrity chefs are a staple of British culture, what with names like Nigella Lawson, Gordon Ramsay, Ainsley Harriott and Jamie Oliver being typical around the household. However, there are hundreds of chefs out there working constantly to produce top quality cooking shows, one of them being a hidden gem in the Hamptons, Ina Garten.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Ina’s former career might come as a surprise to those that have seen her on TV: she used to be a White House nuclear policy analyst. A job in politics is a far cry from a career making food for the people she loves, but it certainly allowed her one thing – to stay close to her high school sweetheart, Jeffrey Garten, who also worked at the White House.
Those familiar with Ina’s television show, Barefoot Contessa, will know that Jeffrey is as big a staple to the programme as the cooking itself. Having been together ever since the start of their relationship in high school, the couple are often shown at the end of each programme enjoying the meals Ina has lovingly prepared. However, that’s not to say there’s not plenty of cooking, baking and recipe-sharing in each one!
Famed for her friendly and approachable personality, Ina is filmed cooking as she would on a normal day in her home. Genial and passionate about her job, Ina shows us how to create delicious dishes with a simplicity and panache that make her endearing to watch even if you’re not into cooking. Coming from humble roots, Ina’s chef story is quite different to those you might be familiar with. With a burning passion for cooking and baking, Ina bravely quit her job at the White House to open a gourmet food store that was named Barefoot Contessa after the 1954 film – a name Ina decided to keep. She then discovered instant popularity as her products were the talk of the New York village, Westhampton Beach and, from there, grew in fame until she sold the store, began writing books and was approached to do the television show.
Now, Ina is a celebrity chef quite different from the likes of Oliver and Ramsay. With no formal training, Ina had to teach herself everything she knows – but, thankfully, that amounts to rather a lot! Offering pleasing recipes, some derived from her Jewish background, Ina is a delight to view while pottering around at home with your Sky TV food channels on and you’re sure to not only pick up a tip or two but feel like you’ve made a new friend!
